Rainmeter is an application I use to make my desktop clean and free of shortcuts or links. It helps easily display information that would be hard to get, like the CPU usage. It also makes it easier for me to tell the time, date, and temperature outside by a simple glance at my desktop. I also use it to keep my desktop minimalist and aesthetically pleasing, so I can quickly access whichever shortcuts I need.
